Why a website matters more for advocates#
A shop can run ads, print flyers or post offers on Instagram. An advocate cannot. Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules bars advocates from soliciting work or advertising, directly or indirectly.
People still look for advocates online. Someone with a cheque bounce notice, a property dispute or a motor accident claim searches on Google, opens a few profiles and checks qualifications before calling. When they search your name, a proper website with your enrolment details is often the first thing that tells them you are real and practising.
What Rule 36 allows on your website#
The 2008 amendment lets advocates furnish these particulars on a website:
| Allowed detail | Example |
|---|---|
| Name, address, phone, email | Adv. Name, chamber address near the Coimbatore court complex |
| Enrolment number and date | MS.XXXX/20XX |
| State Bar Council of enrolment | Bar Council of Tamil Nadu & Puducherry |
| Bar association membership | The bar association you belong to |
| Professional and academic qualifications | B.A., LL.B., LL.M. |
| Areas of practice | Civil, family, property, cheque bounce, consumer, motor accident claims |
Anything beyond the permitted particulars can be treated as a violation of Rule 36 and lead to misconduct proceedings under the Advocates Act, 1961. Sources: SCC Online, iPleaders.
What your advocate website includes#
| Section | What it does |
|---|---|
| Entry disclaimer | A click-through notice that the site is for information only and is not solicitation, the format most Indian law firms use |
| Advocate profile | Name, enrolment number and date, Bar Council, bar association and qualifications, exactly as permitted |
| Areas of practice | One clear line or short page per area, written factually |
| Chamber and contact | Address, map, phone, WhatsApp and email so a client who has already chosen you can reach you |
| Courts and forums | The courts and tribunals you appear before, stated as fact |
| Disclaimer and privacy pages | Standard pages every advocate site should carry |
| Fast mobile pages | Most clients open your link on a phone, often from WhatsApp |

Is it allowed for an advocate in India to have a website?
Yes. The Bar Council of India amended Rule 36 in 2008 to allow advocates to furnish specific particulars on a website: name, contact details, enrolment number and date, Bar Council, bar association, qualifications and areas of practice. Content beyond these particulars can be treated as a violation.
Can my website show client reviews or case results?
We do not include them. Testimonials, case wins, success rates and claims like "best advocate" go beyond the permitted particulars and can be seen as advertising.
Can I mention my fees or a free consultation?
We leave fees and "free consultation" offers off the website. Clients who contact you can discuss fees directly with you.
Do you give legal advice on Bar Council rules?
No. We are a web agency, not lawyers. We build to the published Rule 36 particulars and keep the content factual; please confirm anything you are unsure about with your Bar Council or a senior.
How long does it take?
A one-page Starter site is ready in about 3 days and a Business site in about 7 days, once we have your details.
Can the website be in Tamil?
Yes. Your practice areas and contact section can be in Tamil and English.
