Ask five people in Coimbatore what a website costs and you will hear five answers: "₹3,000, my cousin did it", "₹25,000", "₹1 lakh", "free, use Wix". All of them can be right. The problem is that nobody tells you what you actually get at each price, or what you will keep paying every year after launch.

We build websites for small businesses in Tamil Nadu, so this post shows our own prices next to everyone else's. Use it to compare any quote you get, including ours.

The short answer#

What you need Typical price in Tamil Nadu (one-time) Good for
1-page website ₹5,000 – ₹10,000 Shops, salons, tutors, home businesses
5-page business website ₹12,000 – ₹30,000 Clinics, restaurants, coaching centres, service businesses
Website with booking, menu or catalogue ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 Clinics with appointments, restaurants, showrooms
Online store (e-commerce) ₹40,000 – ₹2,00,000+ Businesses selling products online with UPI/cards
Custom web app (billing, fees, inventory) ₹50,000 and up Schools, manufacturers, distributors

These are typical ranges from freelancers and small agencies. Large agencies often quote ₹50,000 to ₹5,00,000 for the same kinds of projects.

On top of this, every website has yearly costs. Most surprises come from these.

The yearly costs nobody mentions#

A website is not a one-time purchase like a signboard. It is closer to a shop rent. Here is what you pay every year:

1. Domain name (yourbusiness.in or .com) Usually ₹500 – ₹1,500 per year. The first year is often cheap and the renewal is higher. Make sure the domain is registered in your name, not the developer's. If it is in their name and they disappear, you lose your website address.

2. Hosting (where the website lives) Usually ₹2,000 – ₹6,000 per year for a small business site. "Free hosting for life" offers often have a catch: slow servers, ads, or a big renewal bill after year one.

3. SSL certificate (the 🔒 padlock) Should be free today. If someone charges you ₹3,000 a year for SSL on a small site, ask why.

4. Maintenance and updates Changing prices, adding photos, updating timings, fixing things when they break. Some developers do this free for a few months, then charge per change (₹300 – ₹1,000 each) or a monthly fee.

Make sure the domain is registered in your name. That one step saves more trouble than anything else on this list.

What actually changes the price#

When two quotes differ by ₹20,000, it is usually because of these:

  • Number of pages. A 1-page site is quick. Separate pages for each service, doctor or product take longer to write and design.
  • Who writes the content. If you hand over all the text and photos, it is cheaper. If the agency writes in English and Tamil, it takes more time and is worth more.
  • Features. WhatsApp and call buttons are simple. Online booking, payment, a product catalogue or a login area add real work.
  • Template vs custom design. A template with your logo dropped in is cheap. A design made around your brand costs more and usually looks better on mobile.
  • Speed and SEO setup. A slow website loses customers before it even loads. Proper Google setup (Search Console, Google Business Profile, local keywords) takes extra work, and that work is what brings customers to you.

₹3,000 website vs ₹30,000 website: what is the real difference?#

Honestly, a ₹3,000 website can work if all you need is a phone number online. But this is what you often find at the very low end:

  • A template used for 50 other businesses, so it looks generic
  • Very slow on mobile, which is where most of your customers will open it
  • No Google setup, so nobody finds it unless you share the link
  • Domain and hosting registered in the developer's name
  • No one to call when something breaks

A good ₹15,000 – ₹30,000 website should give you:

  • A mobile-first design that loads in about 2 seconds
  • Click-to-WhatsApp, click-to-call and Google Maps buttons
  • Basic local SEO, so you show up for "dentist in RS Puram" and similar searches
  • Your Google Business Profile connected and set up
  • Domain in your name, plus all the logins handed over to you

The question to ask isn't "what's the cheapest?" but "will this bring me even 2–3 extra customers a month?" For most clinics, restaurants and service businesses, two new customers a month pays for the whole website within a year.

Which one should you choose?#

  • Just starting, or need to be findable online? Start with a 1-page site. You can grow it later.
  • Clinic, restaurant, coaching centre or service business? A 5-page site with Google Business Profile setup brings the best return for the money.
  • Need customers to book, order or browse products? You need booking or catalogue features. Budget ₹35,000 or more.
  • Selling products across India? Get an e-commerce quote, and ask about payment gateway and delivery integration costs separately.

Frequently asked questions#

Can I get a good website for under ₹5,000?

You can get a basic online presence, usually a template page with your contact details. It works if you only need a phone number on Google. For a site that brings enquiries, budget at least ₹7,000 – ₹15,000.

Is a website a one-time cost?

No. Building it is one-time, but the domain, hosting and updates cost ₹3,000 – ₹12,000 every year for a small business site.

Do I need a website if I have Instagram and Google Business Profile?

They help, but you don't own them and they show limited information. A website gives you one trusted place for your services, prices, photos and contact buttons, and it helps your Google Maps ranking too.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

A 1-page site takes 2–4 days. A 5-page site with content and Google setup usually takes 1–2 weeks, depending on how quickly you share photos and details.

Who should own the domain and hosting?

You should. Ask for the domain to be registered in your name and for all logins to be handed over to you after launch.

Final word#

A website is not an expense to minimise. It is your shop's address on Google. Pay for what brings customers, skip what doesn't, and always make sure you own your domain and your logins.
